Chess Puzzle Challenges
About Chess Puzzle Challenges
Each puzzle shows a position where White can force checkmate. Easy and Medium puzzles are mate in one; Hard and Expert are mate in two, and on Expert the first move is always a quiet move rather than a check.
Every puzzle was verified by Game Oix's move-checking engine: mate-in-one puzzles have exactly one mating move, and mate-in-two puzzles have exactly one winning first move and no faster mate. Your moves are checked by the same engine, so any genuinely winning answer is accepted.
How to play
- Tap a white piece to see its legal moves, then tap a destination.
- If your move does not force mate, it is rejected and you can try again (misses are counted).
- In mate-in-two puzzles, after your first move the computer replies; then find the mate.
- Solve a puzzle to unlock the next one. There are ten puzzles at each difficulty.
- Hint highlights the piece to move.
Strategy and tips
- Study the enemy king's escape squares first.
- List checks, then captures, then threats.
- Test each candidate against every defence.
- Know the patterns: back-rank mate, queen-and-king mate, the two-rook ladder, smothered mate.
