Oware

About Oware

Oware is one of the great games of the mancala family, played across West Africa and the Caribbean. Each player has six pits with four seeds each. On your turn, pick up every seed from one of your pits and sow them one by one anticlockwise. A pit with twelve or more seeds skips the pit it was emptied from on each lap.

If your last seed lands in the computer's row and makes that pit hold exactly two or three seeds, you capture them — together with any unbroken run of twos and threes just before it in the computer's row. You must always leave your opponent seeds to play if you can, and a move that would capture every seed in their row captures nothing (the "grand slam" rule). The first to capture 25 of the 48 seeds wins.

How to play

  1. Tap one of your pits (bottom row) to sow its seeds anticlockwise.
  2. Capture by finishing in a computer pit that ends with 2 or 3 seeds.
  3. You must feed the computer if its row is empty.
  4. First to 25 seeds wins; if nobody can move, remaining seeds go to the side they are on.

Strategy and tips

  • Build a big pit — a pit with 12+ seeds can lap the board and capture several pits at once.
  • Avoid leaving pits with one or two seeds in your row where the computer can reach them.
  • Count landing spots before every move: seeds land in order, so you can calculate exactly.

Questions about Oware

How is this different from Mancala on Game Oix?

Our Mancala uses Kalah rules with stores and extra turns. Oware has no stores to sow into and captures twos and threes on the opponent’s side.
