About Hearts

Hearts is played by four players with one deck. Each heart you take in a trick costs one point and the Queen of Spades costs thirteen, so most of the time you want to avoid winning them. Before each hand you pass three cards — to the left, then the right, then across, then no pass, in rotation. The Two of Clubs leads the first trick, and you must follow suit when you can. Hearts can't be led until one has been played ("hearts are broken").

Take all thirteen hearts and the Queen and you shoot the moon: everyone else gets 26 points instead. The game ends when someone reaches the target score; the lowest total wins.

How to play

  1. Choose three cards to pass and press Pass.
  2. Play a highlighted card (legal cards are raised and outlined).
  3. Follow the suit led if you can; otherwise play any card (no points on the very first trick).
  4. The highest card of the suit led wins the trick. Lowest score at the end wins.

Strategy and tips

  • Pass high spades and hearts, especially the Ace and King of Spades if you lack low spades to protect them.
  • Void a suit (pass away all of one suit) so you can discard dangerous cards later.
  • Watch the Queen of Spades. Lead low spades to force it out when you don't hold it.
  • Shooting the moon needs nearly all the high cards — and a nerve of steel.
